Four Named AMCC Athlete of the Week
ERIE, Pa. – Four Penn State Behrend student-athletes were named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Athletes of the Week, announced on Monday.
In men’s golf, senior Zack Polanski (Erie, PA/McDowell) carded a low score of 76 to win individual medalist honors on his first time out this season at the Hilbert Invitational and help the Lions finish in first place with a team score of 320.
In women’s tennis, freshman Monica Gokhberg (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) has only lost one game in four singles matches this season. She posted three singles wins and two doubles this weekend at the No. 1 spot. The freshman is undefeated in conference play, posting a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory and an 8-2 doubles decision against previously undefeated Mt. Aloysius on Saturday.
In women’s volleyball, senior Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) posted back-to-back double-doubles in a pair of wins for the Lions this weekend. She had 13 kills and 20 digs in the Lions first-ever win over St. Vincent. Against Kenyon, Sperry hit .333 on 14 kills and two errors while recording 11 digs and two aces to help Behrend improve its win streak to four straight matches.
Sophomore goalie Jarrod Wassell (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) earned Defensive Player of the Week for men’s soccer. Wassell was excellent between the pipes in two Behrend men’s soccer victories this weekend. He made four saves and allowed just one goal in 185:41 minutes. He also earned his first shutout of the season keeping Buffalo St. off the board.
