Club Sports
Club sports can play an important role in
the development of a comprehensive student life program. They offer
opportunities for recreation and competition in areas not provided
by the varsity program. Club sports tend to be less structured than
varsity programs and thus are available to a broader cross-section
of the student population. Club sports can serve as a precursor to
future varsity programs as interest is demonstrated and funds are
secured.
The characteristics of club sports vary greatly, ranging from
informal recreational activities provided on campus and open to all
students to more formal teams that belong to leagues and compete on
and off campus.
Intercollegiate Club Sports
Intercollegiate club sports are designed for competition against other academic institutions. Participation tends to be limited to a finite number of players-often the most skilled players-and resources are allocated primarily to facilitate league play.
These competitive club sport programs have many characteristics common to varsity athletic teams, and others common to student organizations. There is typically need for coaching and supervision, and practices are held on a regular basis. For more information on intercollegiate club sports, contact the Office of Intramural and Recreational Programs at 814-898-6280.
The intercollegiate club sports currently offered are:
Cheerleading
Men's Lacrosse
Women's Lacrosse
Rugby
Ice
Hockey (Unofficial site)
Penn State Behrend's ROTC students also compete against other institutions in ROTC's Ranger Challenge Competition.
Recreational Club Sports
Recreational club sports are
recognized by the Student Government Association (SGA). Activities
sponsored by each club are open to all students. Resources are
available to club sports through SGA, the student activity fee, and
through fund raising. For more information on recreational club
sports, contact the Office of Student Activities, located in the
Reed Union Building, at 814-898-6171.
