Behrend Baseball Selected by AMCC Coaches to "Three-Peat" as Conference Champs
The AMCC coaches poll was recently released as the Penn State Behrend Lions baseball were selected to "three-peat" as conference champs. The blue and white are the reigning two time AMCC champs after compiling a 33-3 conference record over the past two seasons.
The blue and white return seven seniors from year ago and are led by Preseason All-American shortstop Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville). Fyffe is the reigning AMCC Player of the Year and ECAC South Region Player of the Year. Fyffe batted .406 and had a team high 69 hits, nine home runs, and a school record 58 RBIs this past season. Fyffe was also picked as the frontrunner for the 2010 AMCC Player of the Year. Another AMCC player to watch is centerfielder Jon Gray (State College/State College). Gray was named to the NCAA All-Region team a year ago and First Team All-AMCC two consecutive seasons. Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) also returns to the Behrend infield as a two time All-AMCC performer. Joining Gray inthe outfield will be junior Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) who also saw himself be named to the All-Conference team for two consecutive seasons. Fran Haus (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) returns to the pitching staff who saw the likes of four highly contributive seniors graduate a year ago. Haus was the winning pitcher in the 2009 AMCC title game in a victory over Penn State Altoona.
Behrend will have the target on their backs once again as several teams will be vying for the conference crown. Following close behind the Behrend Lions in votes was the Frostburg State Bobcats in second and the 2009 AMCC runner-up Penn State Altoona Lions in third.
The Behrend Lions will kick off their season on their spring trip to Port St. Lucie, Florida where they will play eight varsity games and four junior varsity games. They will open with NCAA Regional participant Elizabethtown on Sunday, March 7.
