DELAWARE, OH - The Penn State Behrend baseball team dropped a pair of close games to Ohio Wesleyan Saturday afternoon, 9-8 and 2-1.
In game one, the Bishops jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held the Lions (6-8) off the board until the third inning.
Eric Bellisario (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) got things going with a single to center. Two batters later, Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) then singled followed by a single from Ryan Hamm (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) to load up the bases.
With two outs, Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) sigled to left to score Bellisario and Berstrom, making it a 3-2 ballgame.
In the fifth, Behrend added two more runs on two hits. Bohman came through in the clutch again with a two out double to score Hamm and came around to score himself on the same play with a throwing error by the Ohio Wesleyan catcher.
The Lions jumped out to their largest lead of the game in the seventh when they added four runs on four hits and one Bishop error to make it an 8-5.
Ohio Wesleyan, however, strung together three hits and took advantage of one Behrend error in the eighth to score four runs, taking the lead again, 9-8.
Game two proved to be a low scoring affair. The Lions and Bishops each scored a run in the second inning, but Ohio Wesleyan added a run in the bottom of the fifth that turned out to be the difference in the game.
Behrend struck first in the second off a John Brittner (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) single, who brought in Bohman who reached base with a leadoff walk.
With the game tied at 1-all, Ohio Wesleyan's Anthony Crow singled up the middle to lead off the fifth inning. He then came around to score when John Rings singled through the left side.
Hamm picked up two hits in the game while Brittner added two of his own to go along with the lone RBI.
The Lions will open Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action this Wednesday when they travel to Hamburg, NY to play Hilbert beginning at 1 p.m.
