The blue and white jumped out to an early lead as sophomore Aaron Meehl (North East/North East) scored on a pass from teammate Kyle McKinney (Chesterland/West Geauga) to make the score 1-0. Later in the first half, Behrend junior Lance Sabol (North Huntingdon/Norwin) connected on his first goal of the season on an assist from fellow junior Jerry Tortella (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) to increase the Behrend Lions lead to 2-0. The game stayed at 2-0 through the first half and much into the second until Geneseo cut the lead in half at the 84:44 mark on a goal from junior Ryan Stansfield. The contest remained interesting throughout, but Behrend held its ground and wound up with the 2009 tournament crown. Senior goalkeeper Dustin Walker (Apollo/Kiski) was named tournament's Most Valuable Player for his clutch performances and big time saves.
The blue and white will be back at it on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12 when they will travel to the Fredonia State Tournament. Behrend will play Buffalo State on Friday at 2:30 pm and Fredonia on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
