In what has been an almost weekly event the Behrend divers have once again been named the AMCC athletes of the week for the week of January 19, 2009.
Divers Krystal Kovach (Scott Township/Chartiers Valley) and Stephen Graves (McMurray/Peter's Township) have both won the award for the fifth time in six weeks.
Kovach was once again solid on the diving board. She broke both the Gannon pool record and the Behrend team record on the one meter board. The 274.55 mark is also an NCAA qualifying mark. She would also place second on the three meter board against Gannon. Kovach would follow up her record breaking performance against Gannon by taking the one meter event against Penn State Altoona.
Graves would follow Kovach's performance against Gannon by breaking the Behrend men's one meter diving record by three points with a score of 257.85. Graves would win the one meter event against both Gannon and conference foe Penn State Altoona.
Joining the incumbent divers on the performers of the week list was freshman Terrance Watterson (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood). Watterson had a strong weekend in the pool. Against Gannon he won the 500 free and vs. Penn St. Altoona he won the 1000 free, both with personal best times (5:27.63 and 11:18.98 respectively). He also placed in the 200 free and 100 back at Friday's meet, and the 500 free and 400 free relay at Saturday's meet.
The Behrend Lions will be hosting Washington and Jefferson on Saturday, January 24, 2009. The meet will be televised on Image Sports Network in the Erie area.
