Indoor Track and Field Finishes Regular Season Strong at Marietta

Penn State Behrend indoor track and field capped off their regular season with solid performances at the Marietta College Open last Saturday.  The men's team would go on to finish in 3rd place while the women would end up 5th overall at the meet.

"The Marietta meet was a good way to finish the regular season for the
indoor track season," said coach Greg Cooper.  "The teams did well as a whole, and the ECAC qualifiers were able to get in one last competition before the
championship season begins."

The men's side had several strong performances and many individuals contributed to the 3rd place finish.  Ronson Mazany (Ashville/Panama Central) had an outstanding meet winning the long jump and the triple jump with marks of 6.62 and 13.57 meters respectively. His marks in the triple jump earned him a new Behrend record and both events qualified him for the ECAC championships.  Finishing a close second in the triple jump was David Robinson-Gault (Amherst/Amherst Central) with a score of 12.98 meters.  Eston Winn (Erie/McDowell) would provide yet another Behrend record as he won the pole vault with a mark of 4.40 meters.  Winn also qualified for the ECAC's which will take place in early March.

The women's team finished the regular season with a multiple of great performances from a number of individuals.  Jenna Fatica (Erie/Villa Maria) created a new Behrend record as well as qualified for the ECAC's with her showing in the 800 meter run.  Fatica won the event with a time of 2:21.11.  The 4x800 meter relay belonged to the blue and white as a team of Elizabeth Keller (Bradford/Bradford), Tanisha Wheatley (Saltsburg/Kiski), Meghan Kronenwetter (St. Marys/Elk County) and Amanda Wehrle (Rossiter/Punxsutawney) took home the crown with a winning time of 10:20.49.  Katie Monoskey (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) also took home some school records in both the shot put and weight throw with marks of 10.63 and 13.00 meters respectively.

"It was great to be able to go into a competition of Division 1, 2 and 3
schools and come out as one of the best in both the men's and women's
final scores," said coach Cooper.  "For most of our athletes, we won't compete again for a month, so the next 4 weeks of training are vital to our outdoor season success."

The Behrend Lions will take part in the ECAC championships on March 6-7 and finish the indoor season at the NCAA championships on March 13-14 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
