Hartzler Captures 16th at NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships
Penn State Behrend's Bryson Hartzler (Belleville, PA/Indian Valley) has qualified for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships which will be hosted May 21-23 by Marietta College. Hartzler was part of a group of Behrend track & field athletes who recently competed at the ECAC Championships. In the high jump, the sophomore cleared a mark of 6' 4.75" to finish in sixth place. Hartzler qualified for the NCAA championships when he set a school record with a jump of 6' 8.75" earlier this season.

The third place finish matched the best men's finish ever and was a new best for the women's team. The men earned 105 points, while Salisbury won the meet with 200. The women earned 98 points, while Frostburg State won with 123.

The Penn State Behrend men's track and field team won the Westminster Invitational on April 18, while the women finished second. The men's team scored 252 points to run away with the title as Mount Union finished second among the seven teams with 173 points. The women's team took second of seven teams with 128 points, while Westminster was first with 248.

The men's and women's track and field teams both captured team titles at the W & J Invitational on Saturday, April 4 with numerous athletes posting big scores. The men's team won the meet with a team score of 128.50, defeating second place Carnegie Mellon by 11.5 points (117) in the 13-team field.

Eight Penn State Behrend track & field athletes represented themselves well at the ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Tufts University March 6 and 7. Over 100 Division III institutions sent track & field athletes to Boston to compete at the championships, and the blue and white had several notable successes over the weekend. Jenna Fatica (Erie/Villa Maria) capped off a terrific indoor season by setting a new Behrend record in the 800 meter run.

Penn State Behrend indoor track and field capped off their regular season with solid performances at the Marietta College Open last Saturday. The men's team would go on to finish in 3rd place while the women would end up 5th overall at the meet. "The Marietta meet was a good way to finish the regular season for the indoor track season," said coach Greg Cooper. "The teams did well as a whole, and the ECAC qualifiers were able to get in one last competition before the championship season begins."

Both teams got off to a strong showing by placing high marks in numerous events including some new Behrend records. Penn State Behrend Director of Athletics Brian Streeter, George Washington University men's and women's head coach Scott Reed, and California State University-Maritime Academy Director of Athletics Marvin Christopher were elected to the Collegiate Water Polo Association Board of Directors by the league membership at the organization's 2009 Annual Meeting on June 1.
