WASHINGTON, Pa. – Meredith Gipson scored the game-winning goal to lead Penn State Behrend women's soccer team past Washington & Jefferson 1-0 in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday night.
In the 33rd minute, Gipson netted the lone goal of the game on a breakaway to help the Lions (1-0) start the 2010 season with a victory. Freshman Robin Siegenthaler made seven saves on 10 shots by the Presidents (0-1) in her first collegiate start. Newcomer Sam Vasy also made her collegiate debut in the starting lineup for the Lions on defense.
For Washington & Jefferson, Stephanie Saussol came away with six saves while Holly Shipley fired off a team-high three shots.
Behrend returns to action on Saturday when they host the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. The Lions will face Hiram in the first round at 10 a.m.
