Jarrod Wassell was a dominant goalkeeper for the Behrend men’s soccer team from 2011-14. He was a three-time All-Conference selection, while being named AMCC Defensive Player of the Year and NSCAA Great Lakes All-Region his senior year. That same year, Wassell tallied a 0.61 goals-against average (GAA) to go with nine shutouts. He allowed 11 goals in 20 starts, the second fewest all-time in program history. For his career, Wassell tallied 157 saves and posted a 0.70 GAA, and had 26 career shutouts.
Wassell at the forefront as one of the most formidable goalkeepers for Behrend. After his six appearances as a freshman, he earned the starting spot as a sophomore. Wassell ranked second in the conference in goals-against average (0.77) and allowed the second-least amount of goals in program history (14). He recorded 59 saves and seven shutouts for Second-Team All- AMCC accolades.
"The best defense is a good offense" is an adage that has been applied to athletics. This stood true with Wassell between the pipes. His junior season, he landed on the All-AMCC First Team and was named an ECAC All-Star. Wassell made 51 saves and recorded nine shutouts, including the AMCC Championship game against Medaille. He posted a .81 goals-against average and a .761 save percentage to get the Lions back to the NCAA Tournament.
Wassell’s exceptional career is highlighted by his crucial role in propelling the Behrend men’s soccer team. He became the third player in program history to earn AMCC Defensive Player of the Year. Wassell was the backbone of the defense that helped Behrend capture three AMCC Championships and produce a 62-20-4 overall record for four years.
