Men's Track and Field Wins Second Straight
The Penn State Behrend men's track and field team defeated three other teams at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet for their second straight first place finish.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's track and field team defeated three other teams at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet for their second straight first place finish.
A week after winning the Washington and Jefferson Invitational, the Lions racked up 207 points for another team victory.
Kalil Slaughter (Sheffield, PA/Sheffield) led the way with first place finishes in both the 100m and 200m. Slaughter ran the 100m in 11.04 and the 200m in 22.38, both times qualifying the freshman for ECAC's. Slaughter also teamed up with Craig Webb (Johnstown, PA/Richland), Geoffrey Faltot (Mercer, PA/Mercer), and Kevin Lai (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) for the 4x100m. The squad won the event at 43.83m.
Matt McWilliams (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) took first in the 800m at 1:58.99. He also placed fourth in the 1500m with a time of 4:06.32. A trio of Behrend athletes competed alongside McWilliams in the 800m. Devin Beggs (Franklin, PA/Franklin), Josh Natalie (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy), and Patrick Shipton (Mercer, PA/Mercer) all placed in the top-5. Beggs came in at 2:02.75 for third, Natalie finished in 2:04.58 for fourth, and Shipton was in fifth at 2:05.15.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Tyler Yost (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) took second with a time of 10:12.43. Nick Marzka (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) competed in the 400m and took fifth at 52.87.
In the hurdling events, Andres Morales (Alajuela, Costa Rica/ICS), Brian Lauff (McDonald, PA/Fort Cherry), and Lai had excellent outings. Morales took second in the 400m hurdles at 58.10 and third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.36. Lauff placed second in the 110m hurdles at 16.27 with Lai coming in fifth in the 400m hurdles after crossing the line at 1:01.80.
In the field events, John Cerminara (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) qualified for ECAC's in two events. The senior won the discus at 45.67m and took second in the shot put with a distance of 14.50m. Cerminara's distance in the discus also set a new school record. He competed in the hammer throw with Jeremy Tiedemann (Mt. Lebanon, PA/Mt. Lebanon). Cerminara hit 38.10m for third place with Tiedemann coming in fourth at 34.95m.
Conor MacMannis (Stafford, VA/Kubeszki) had a solid day in three events. MacMannis won the high jump at 1.89m, took second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.28m, and placed fourth in the long jump at 6.16m. Kevin Gardner (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) was not far behind MacMannis in the high jump, taking second at 1.84m. Faltot competed in the long jump as well, placing second at 6.53m.
Milt Sibanda (Jefferson, PA/Jefferson-Morgan) took third in the triple jump after leaping 13.15m while Dylan Beck (Saxonburg, PA/Knoch) placed fourth at 12.32m.
Rounding out the top Behrend performers was Dylan Bilka (Seven Fields, PA/Seneca Valley) and Garrett Shaw (Saxonburg, PA/Knoch) in the pole vault. Bilka cleared 4.49m for second place. Shaw vaulted 4.19m to bring home a third place.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday at the Westminster Invitational.
