Behrend Wrestling Opens Season at Lycoming; Savitz 165 Champion
Freshman Mason Savitz was the individual champion at 165 to lead the Penn State Behrend wrestling team at the Lycoming Invitational held on Sunday.
LYCOMING, Pa. – Freshman Mason Savitz was the individual champion at 165 to lead the Penn State Behrend wrestling team at the Lycoming Invitational held on Sunday.
Key Moments:
* M. Savitz, competing in his first collegiate tournament, posted back-to-back pins at 165 before claiming a 4-1 win to advance to the finals
* Savitz recorded his team-leading third pin in the championship match , defeating Wesley Guzman of Oneonta by pin in 6:59
* The Lions had five wrestlers earn runner up, including Evan Whiteside, Cole Neil and Angelo Lomonte, Caleb McCollum and Matt Caldwell
* Whiteside was the runner up at 125 in the junior/senior bracket
* Whiteside started with a 6-4 decision and then recorded a pin in 2:17 to advance to the semifinals
* Whiteside tallied a 20-2 technical fall in the semis to then face Andrew Marchese of Castelton in the finals, falling 14-5 in his final match
* Lomonte joined Whiteside at 125 and started the day 3-0
* In the freshman/sophomore bracket, Lomonte had a pin (0:17), a major decision (16-7) and then a decision (6-3) to advance to the finals
* In the finals, Lomonte fell 10-1 for second place
* Leading the way at 141, Neil had a technical fall (19-4) win and an 8-5 decision before falling in the finals by a technical fall (17-0)
* At heavyweight, Matt Caldwell found himself in the finals after a 10-0 win
* Caldwell fell in the championship bout 3-0 for second place
* At 197 in the freshman/sophomore bracket, McCollum started his collegiate career with two decisions (4-3, 5-3) and then fell in the finals (8-3) to be named runner up
* In third place at 184 was Louie DeJulia for going 2-1 and placing with a 6-1 decision
* Stephan Lynch, wrestling at 165, tallied two technical falls to start the season and then fell twice to finish in fourth place
* Matt Tucci went 2-2 on the day, earning a 6-1 decision and a technical fall at 125 to earn fourth place
* Abe Keep registered a loss and then bounced back with a technical fall (15-0), before posting a 3-0 win over Brodie Little to advance to the fifth-place match at 197
* Keep managed a 9-0 win for fifth place
* Jake Brown started the day 2-1 at 149 and joined Keep in placing fifth overall
* Brown tallied an 8-6 decision and then finished with a 10-4 decision
* At 149, Waneka started the day with a loss and then bounced back to win three straight
* Waneka had a pin, technical fall and then won by decision for fifth overall
* Keaton Venarchick tallied a 3-2 record, getting a pair of major decision wins at 125
