Five Named AMCC Athletes of the Week
Five Penn State Behrend student-athletes were named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Athletes of the Week, announced on Monday.
ERIE, Pa. - Five Penn State Behrend student-athletes were named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Athletes of the Week, announced on Monday.
The Lions swept the men’s soccer honors with Eric Vunovic (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) earning Offensive Player of the Week and Eric Hackworth (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) taking Defensive Player of the Week.
Vunovic came through in the clutch in a 2-0 week for Behrend. With less than five minutes to play against Medaille, he found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-all. Against Pitt-Greensburg, Vunovic netted the game winner with less than 10 minutes to play to extend Behrend's win streak to 11. Hackworth was instrumental in both victories, helping the defense to hold Pitt-Greensburg scoreless for the Lions' fifth shutout of the season.
In women’s tennis, freshman Patra Sangpoompong (Bangkok, Thailand/Erie First Christian Academy) went undefeated in a 2-0 week for Behrend. She posted two singles wins at the No. 2 spot and then teamed up with Malinda Miller at No. 2 doubles for a pair of conference wins.
In women’s volleyball, junior Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) led the Lions to sole possession of first place in the AMCC with a 3-1 win over Hilbert to start the week. She then amassed 129 assists, 40 digs, 19 kills and eight blocks in four matches at the Crusader Classic this weekend. Magnusen paces the AMCC in assists with an 8.31 set average.
Freshman Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) earned her first Defensive Player of the Week honors for women’s soccer. She posted three shut-out victories, including two conference wins. Troyan tallies six saves on 15 shots in three games between the pipes.
