Athletic and Recreational Facilities

Penn State Erie has an outstanding mix of athletic facilities on its 725-acre campus, including the new Junker Center, an athletics and recreation complex that opened in 2001.

Other facilities include a baseball and softball complex, intramural and soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, lighted tennis courts, and the Wintergreen Gorge--a beautiful spot for a walk or hike.

Junker Center

In 2001 the college opened the Junker Center, a $10.2 million athletics and recreation center, providing Behrend and the Erie community with an outstanding multi-purpose facility.

The 72,800-square-foot site features three all-purpose courts and a gymnasium seating 1,600, an eight-lane swimming pool, weight room, three-lane running track, jumping pits, aerobics room, locker rooms, offices, and a variety of exercise equipment.

In addition to serving recreational needs, the Junker Center provides a new venue for major events. In recent months, it has been the site of commencement, scholarship dinners, concerts and musical productions.

The center is named in honor of the Junker family for their long-standing commitment and generosity to Penn State, and especially their support of Behrend's athletics program.
