ERIE, Pa. - On Saturday, December 4, the Behrend Lions baseball
program participated in its annual commitment with Habitat for
Humanity. The baseball program provided two groups of 11 players
and coaches to continue work on a new home build in Erie. The group
combined to donate a full staff covering an eight hour work day
working on the floor and framing of the home.
"This has been a wonderful way for our players and coaches to give
back to the Erie community," said Paul Benim, who enters his 19th
season as a head coach at Behrend. "Saturday our baseball program
made a difference in the community and in a local families lives.
We played a small role by spending a day helping contribute to
Habitat for Humanity. An organization that does an amazing job
assisting families."
In previous years with Habitat, the baseball program has built
storage sheds for new homes, completed roofing, worked on interiors
and exteriors of homes, and organized the Habitat warehouse.
The Behrend Lions athletic staff and the Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee have also worked in the past for Habitat for Humanity as
a community service project.
Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates houses and
neighborhoods by providing simple, decent, affordable homes in
partnership with families in need. Reaching out from Christian
roots across denominational, faith, economic and racial lines,
Habitat works in partnership with prospective and existing
homeowners, volunteers, donors, community organizations and all
those who can help reach these goals.
