Men's Basketball Defeats Frostburg to Keep Pace with AMCC Leaders

Penn State Behrend held on down the stretch to edge Frostburg State 75-71 on Saturday, January 24 in the Junker Center.

Both teams started off the contest playing solid defense as neither team shot better than 39% from the floor in the first twenty minutes.  A close first half ended with the blue and white ahead by three, 31-28. 

In the second half the Behrend Lions (11-6, 7-3) created some distance when Chris Saltzman (Jefferson Hills/Central Catholic) scored six straight to help Behrend grab a 12-point lead (53-41) with ten minutes to go.  Frostburg made a run to get within four points at 61-57 with 2:23 to play, before Tom Newman (Girard/Northwestern) buried a huge 3-point shot from the corner to create a seven-point advantage with just under two minutes to play.  Frostburg then put the Behrend Lions on the foul line to stretch the game, but the blue and white connected on 11 free-throws in the last two minutes to hang on for the 75-71 victory.

Frostburg (9-8, 6-4) got 13 points from Keith Hazel, 11 points from Nick Sefcik, and ten each from Steven Ogg and Juan Wansley.

Behrend had four players in double-figures in scoring.  Newman had 14 points with five assists, while Adam Potter (Pittsburgh/Mt.Lebanon) posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.  Steve Piotrowicz (Erie/Cathedral Prep) also chipped in with 14 points while Saltzman dropped 12 in the win.

The men now take to the road for their next two games, first on January 28 at Mt. Aloysius and then on January 31 at Pitt-Greensburg.
