Men's Swimming Ties Baldwin-Wallace
BEREA, Ohio – Steve Torre broke a seven-year school record and the Penn State Behrend Lions men’s swimming and diving team won six events to tie Baldwin-Wallace in non-conference action on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets had a five-point lead heading in to the final event and the Lions took first in the 400 free relay for 11 points to post the tie with a score of 119.5. Brendan Lacey, Hunter Backenstose, Brian Mong and Josh Weaver were apart of the winning relay team.
Torre finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.03 and it set a new school record, breaking Eric Phillips mark of 4:30. 63 set back in February of 2003. He also was second in the 200 breast stroke (2:22.32).
Torre also started out the meet with Backentose, Jake Sherk and Everett Sargent for a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:44.37). The Lions had another foursome follow in second just 39 tenths of a second behind the winners.
In the 1,000 free, Mong won in a time of 10:32.17 and then took second in the 500 free (5:05.86). The next event, the 200 free, Behrend took the top two spots thanks to Lacey and Josh Weaver. Lacey set the winning time at 1:47.52 and Weaver clocked in at 1:50.10. Lacey also won 500 free in 4:54.09, the third to last event to keep the Lions in the meet.
Clay Altemose was instrumental in earning points for the Lions, winning the 200 fly (2:04.04) and then taking third in the 200 backs (2:10.27).
Behrend returns to action on Saturday in its first home meet against Allegheny and Chatham, beginning at 1 p.m.
