Pittsburgh, PA – The Penn State Behrend cross country program finished 2nd place in both the men’s and women’s Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) championship races held at Schenley Park Saturday.
Taking home the first place trophy for the AMCC men’s and women’s teams would be Franciscan. The women Barons ran a strong pace to easily beat out the second place Lions in points, 28 to 39. On the men’s side Franciscan outran Behrend with an average time of 27:44 to 28:02.
For the first time in four years the men failed to bring home the coveted trophy, however, individually the men took home eight All-AMCC honors. This award is given to the Top 15 runners of the AMCC championships. Leading the way for the Lions was Carl Kallgren. The junior clocked in at 27:14 to finish 2nd overall in the standings. Denny Lydon was not too far behind as the freshmen crossed the line at 27:50. Behrend’s third, fourth and fifth place runners where Steve Monnie (28:15), Danny Mello (28:16) and Alex Myers (28:33). These three men earned the 7th, 8th, and 9th spots respectively. Chris Henly (28:41), Steel Flynn (28:54) and David Suhan (29:33) also went on to collect all-conference honors.
The women rebounded from a disappointing 2009 AMCC championship in which they finished 3rd. The Lions ran much harder this year to lock up second place. Seven women would make the All-AMCC team led by Katie Spade. Spade finished 3rd overall in 19:24. Liz Keller representing the Behrend senior class, clocked in at 19:54 to conclude a fantastic AMCC career. Catie Bertges placed directly behind Keller at the 7 spot with a time of 19:56. Haley Hughes (20:24), Emily Berry (20:36), Jenna Fatica (20:40) and Katie Patterson (20:42) were the other four ladies to earn all-conference honors and helped the Lions to an average time of 20:03 on the course.
A select few men and women runners will return for one last race this season. The NCAA Regional’s will be held at Cooper’s Lake in Slippery Rock, PA on November 13 at 11 a.m.
