Bertges Wins; Lions Capture Team Title
The Penn State Behrend women's cross country team won the 2011 Behrend Invitational on Saturday.
ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's cross country team won the 2011 Behrend Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Catie Bertges (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) led the way for the Lions en route to winning the individual title. Bertges led the entire 5K races from start to finish increasing her lead at every mile mark. She also set a personal best with a time of 18:40 while edging out Jenn Krueger of Westminster and Sabrina Brooks of Buffalo State. Just two weeks ago at the Buffalo State Invitational, Brooks topped Bertges by five seconds.
Katie Spade (Warren, PA/Warren) and Zofia Stark (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) posted times of 19:52 and 20:08 respectively to round out the overall top six. Behrend also received strong performances by Katie Patterson (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) and Haley Hughes (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton). Patterson clocked in at 20:35 while Hughes finished with a time of 20:36. All 11 runners for the Lions set season best times.
Behrend will be back in action on Saturday at the Robert Wesleyan Invitational. Start time is 11 a.m.
